Around 70 million people list Italian as their mother tongue, mainly from the Italian peninsula, southern Switzerland, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. As an individual language with a large number of dialects, Italian, like the other romance languages, is derived directly from Latin, as spoken by the Romans and the peoples assimilated under their empire. Go to top Teaching Staff SpanishSpanish is a world language. It is listed as mother tongue by around 400 million people. The majority of them live in South and Central America and in Spain. Around 45 million Spanish-speakers live in the USA. This puts the USA in second place worldwide after Mexico but ahead of Colombia and Spain. Today, in addition to Spain, the territory where Spanish is spoken encompasses Latin America and the Caribbean states.
The Castellano dialect is the historic basis for modern Spanish, with the result that the Spanish spoken in Spain is often known as Castellano. Spanish-speaking colonialists spread the language to the Canary Islands, the Antilles, the Philippines, North America, the majority of South America and coastal regions of Africa. On the Iberian peninsula, the area in which Spanish is spoken covers the majority of the political area. However, there are three regions in which Spanish is not the major language. Galicia in the northwest, the Basque country in the north and Catalonia on the eastern coast.

Its most widely spoken form is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. 320 million people list Arabic as their mother tongue. A further 60 million people speak it as a second language. As the language of the Koran, Arabic is used as a sacred language by Muslims all around the world. Modern Standard Arabic is based on classical Arabic.
Arabic is based on its own alphabet of 28 characters which is written from right to left. With a few exceptions, the form and structure of the individual characters change depending on whether they are at the beginning, middle or end of a word.

Go to top Teaching Staff JapaneseJapanese is a syllabic language. There is only one free-standing consonants. Everything else is open syllables. Japanese is spoken by more than 127 million people, outside Japan mainly in the USA and Brazil.
Modern Japanese is written in Kanji, which are derived from Chinese script and form the word stem as logograms, syllabaries known as Hiragana and Katakana and the Latin alphabet, known as Rõmaji in Japan. These scripts have different specific functions and are used in parallel in day to day texts. At school, Japanese children learn around 1945 characters; the most comprehensive compendium contains more than 50,000 characters, of which "only" around 10,000 are used in Eastern Asia.

Go to top Teaching Staff SerbianSerbian is spoken by approximately 12 million people worldwide. It is the official language of Serbia and also widely used in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Croatia and Macedonia. Since 2006 the language has officially been written in Cyrillic script. However in everyday use and in the media the Latin form is also used. Serbian is very similar to both Croatian and Bosnian, so that their speakers can easily communicate.
