Albanian is the official language of Albania and Kosovo. Albanian is spoken by more than 7.5 million people: 3.1 million in Albania, 2.6 million in other southern European countries, and by more than one million emigrants around the world. There are two main dialects: Gheg in the North and Tosk in the South of the country. Both dialects comprise further local sub-dialects. The written language has developed from Tosk dialects. The Albanian name for the language is Gjuha Shqipe (short: Shqipija). Albanian vocabulary contains a large amount of loanwords from Latin and a few from Old Greek. Words are usually stressed on the second last syllable: Tirana.
