The Arabic language (al-lugha al-arabiyya) belongs to the Semitic family of languages. Its most widely spoken form is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. 320 million people list Arabic as their mother tongue. A further 60 million people speak it as a second language. As the language of the Koran, Arabic is used as a sacred language by Muslims all around the world. Modern Standard Arabic is based on classical Arabic.
Arabic is based on its own alphabet of 28 characters which is written from right to left. With a few exceptions, the form and structure of the individual characters change depending on whether they are at the beginning, middle or end of a word.
