Passed down in writing for 3500 years, Greek is Europe's oldest language. Modern Greek is based on the same language that Homer used. The Greek alphabet and Greek language have left a lasting mark on all western languages.

The ancient language differs in a number of ways from the Greek that is spoken today. Ancient and Modern Greek are both written using the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet. Modern Greek is spoken today by about 10 million people in Greece and by minorities in Bulgaria, the former Soviet Republics, Italy and Romania.

... in the 4th century BC, Alexander the Great's conquests brought Greek the status of lingua franca? Just like the significance of English today, at that time the whole Mediterranean region used Greek for business, politics, buying, selling and sports.
