Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in most of the northern and central Indian states. Hindi is the second most widely spoken language in the world (after Chinese). More than 600 million people in and around India speak Hindi as their native or everyday language. The word ‘hindī’ is pre-Islamic/Persian of origin and means ‘Indian’. Persian merchants and ambassadors in northern India originally used it to refer to the Indian language. There are two official nationwide languages: Hindi and English. In addition, there are numerous regional official languages.
