The Malay or Indonesian language is spoken by approximately 200 million people worldwide. The language is called “Bahasa Melayu” in Malaysia and “Bahasa Indonesia” in Indonesia. Because there are only minor differences between those two languages, linguistically they are treated as one language. Malaysian is also the official language of Malaysia, and Indonesian of Indonesia and Brunei. However, for most speakers it is a second language alongside one of the numerous regional languages. In 1972, a standardised Latin writing system was created in Malaysia and Indonesia, together with a widely consistent orthography. Before that, Malaysia had used Arabian characters.
