Worldwide, approximately 78 million people speak Korean. In addition to North and South Korea, Korean is spoken in the Chinese province Jilin at the North Korean border. The differences between the Korean dialects are comparatively small, so that Korean is understood equally well by all people across the Korean Peninsula. The separation of North and South Korea has recently led to different developments of the language. The language in South Korea has acquired many new words as loanwords from the English language, whereas in North Korea neologisms are often formed within the Korean word pool. Korean speakers usually avoid making themselves the subject of the sentence. For example, Koreans would say: “The head aches” instead of: “I’ve got a headache”, or: “The throat is dry” instead of: “I’m thirsty”.
