AKAD >> Language+Culture >> Dutch
Dutch is the mother tongue and language of culture of around 25 million people around the world. It is spoken not only in Europe, but also in Africa and overseas. What's more, the derivative of Dutch spoken in South Africa and Namibia is known as Afrikaans, while that spoken in Belgium is called Flemish. Flemish is practically identical to Dutch.
In day to day use, "the Netherlands" are often referred to as "Holland". This is not strictly correct because Holland should not be confused with the Netherlands; Holland is a province in the north of the Netherlands. The Holland dialect should therefore only be correctly used to describe a dialect of Dutch.

… the word Netherlands actually comes from a word meaning "low country"? Half of the country's surface area is below sea level.
