Polish is a western Slavic language and is closely related to Czech and Slovak. Outside Poland, there are around ten million people with Polish as their mother tongue: in the USA, Russia and other states neighbouring the Soviet Union, as well as Canada, Germany and France.

Polish dialects include Lesser Polish, Silesian, Mazovian and Greater Polish. Kashubian (in the North) is often classed as a Polish dialect, although it developed as an independent western Slavic language.
