Today, Portuguese is a world language. It is the mother tongue of 210 million people around the world (170 million in Brazil and 10 million in Portugal). Portuguese spread worldwide in the 15th and 16th centuries, as Portugal built its colonial empire. That's why Portuguese is the official language in a number of independent states and is learned by many as a second language.

Standard Portuguese, also known as Estremenho, has changed more frequently than other variants over the course of history. All forms of Portuguese as spoken in Portugal are still contained in Brazilian Portuguese.

Users of the Brazilian variant of Portuguese can also make themselves understood easily in Portugal.

Did you know that...

... "Eating well" in Brazil means eating meat: The national dish is the popular "feijoada", a stew of different types of meat and sausage, bacon and beans. And don't forget the many juice bars if you fancy a fresh fruit juice.
