AKAD >> Language+Culture >> Romanian
Romanian is spoken by approximately 34 million people worldwide. It is the official language of Romania and Moldova and is also spoken in other southeast European countries. The Romanian language retains many properties from Latin, which other Roman languages have lost over time. For example, Romanian has preserved the neuter form. Since the 16th century the written form of Romanian has used the Cyrillic alphabet, but from the 18th century onwards the Latin alphabet has been used increasingly. In 1862, a Romanian alphabet was officially introduced. It consists of 26 Latin letters and five additional characters: ă, â, î, ş und ţ.
