AKAD >> Language+Culture >> Swedish
Swedish is the national language of Sweden and the second official and school language in Finland. It is spoken by around nine million people. Swedish is part of the northern Germanic (Scandinavian) branch of the Germanic languages, a sub-family of Indo-Germanic languages. Together with Danish, Swedish forms the eastern branch of the Scandinavian languages which have been spoken not only in Denmark but throughout Scandinavia since before the early middle ages. The western Scandinavian languages include Norwegian and Icelandic.
