The Czech language is spoken by approximately 12 million people worldwide. Of these, about 10 million live in the Czech Republic, where Czech is the official language. Since 2004 Czech has also been an official language of the EU. Czech Studies is the science dealing with the language. Czech and Slovakian are very similar to each other, so that Slovaks and Czechs can communicate quite easily. Today, both countries automatically recognize each other’s official documents in their respective languages. Both countries have the explicit right to use the other language for official correspondence. Some Slovaks living in the Czech Republic speak a mix between Czech and Slovakian, colloquially “Czechoslovakian”.
